Harmony is often thought of as a distribution of tension, with consonance describing stability between notes and dissonance describing clashes.
Fractional Mapping Theory grew out of a search for a more straightforward explanation of the origins of consonance and dissonance.
Kyle Sager first began investigating and developing this theory for its potential in justifying a simple consonance/dissonance model for ear training, a 3-tier model for basic intervals/dyads, as a way of examining, comparing, and exploring the basic tensions between two notes for early music learners. He wanted to uncover simple models for encouraging younger musicians to explore the colors in intervals.
Only as the fractional model unfolded did he realize that it might pose interesting opportunities and questions in computational visualization, sound manipulation or even in pyschoacoustics.

Please reach out with questions, ideas, and requests,. Most importantly, please share with us your own success stories with applied Fractional Mapping Theory. We would love to hear from you and to share your success with other readers/joint explorers of these exciting new ideas. We really only scratch the surface of this new concept here. Brilliant minds in physics and music will doubtless uncover a myriad of deeper understandings and applications moving forward. This is the merely beginning of a theoretical conversation.
